OK I leave in a few days on Carnival Fascination. What are the odds
of getting a room upgrade at check in? Any last minute suggestions on
what to look for or do? It's our first family cruise and my sister in
law and in laws who I totally love. I can't wait YAHOO.

Your guess is about as good as mine! Did you book a GTD or a specific
cabin? If a GTD, you may have a better chance. Have a wonderful time with
your family no matter what your cabin!

If the ship is booked solid, upgrades will not be available. If
Carnival has a demand for your class cabin and they think that they can
sell it again...plus there are open cabins in a higher class - upgrades
may be offered. If there is no demand for your class cabin and there
are vacancies in a higher class, they will offer to *sell* you the
upgrade at a slight discount.

I use a cruise specialist travel agent. Her agency never charges a fee.
It takes all the hassle out of this. When I get my documents I may
already have received a 4 class upgrade. If one is available when I
check in, I will be offered it at that time. Just because you are
offered an upgrade does not mean you have to take it. Sometimes the
upgraded cabin is in a location on the ship that you may not want, i.e.
near elevators, under the disco, or partial view obstructed by life boats.

A GTD cabin is one where you choose a cabin in whatever category that you
feel you will be happy in, no matter what...No cabin number is assigned. So
you lock the price in whatever category that you chosen...inside..outside or
balcony..If they have a demand for the category that you have booked and
paid for, in order to fill it, they will bump you up to the next
category..it may not be a different one but it sometimes will be a better
location on the ship. I hope I haven't confused you more!

You can book a Guaranteed cabin without specifying a category. I have
done that and ended up with big picture window.

Some people may spurn this suggestion but go find you a good set or more of
GMRS radios with charging stands. It's a great way to stay connected on
the ship especially with a family. Cellphones no worky worky out in the
great blue yonder. I suggest ones that have at least an 8 mile range.

Our travel agent called today, and said HAL wanted to up grade us to an
outside cabin for $99.00 ,did we want to take advantage of it,they could
not give a cabin # needless to say we turned it down,we like to know
exactly what cabin we are going to have, and we like the one we ordered.

Chris:

Fascination was our first family cruise some years ago. So that brings
back memories. The first cruise is often one's most memorable since
everything is new. We had a great time on that cruise (Miami, Key West,
Cozumel, Miami) and on other ships thereafter. Hope you do, too.

Bon Voyage. -- Rik

Just remember, they're illegal in Mexico and most other Caribbean
ports. In Mexico they will interfere with public service (police,
fire, ambulance) radios.
