Flights without frontiers (AP) Sun 30/03/08 - Air travel to and from a total of nine mainly eastern European countries became a whole lot easier at midnight on Saturday. Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic joined the Schengen zone on 21 December last year. From midnight last night, their airports also became part of the Schengen zone and consequently border checks have been abolished for people travelling to or from other Schengen countries. The event was marked by celebrations at airports in many of the nine countries involved. A total of twenty-four countries are now part of the Schengen zone for free movement of goods and services. Cyprus, Liechtenstein and Switzerland will be joining the Schengen zone from the end of this year. Open-skies From Friday 4 April, European airlines will have greater access to the United States market. They will be allowed to fly from any airport with in the EU to any airport in the USA. |
