Quote "The plane was on route from Queen Beatrix International Airport on
the Dutch-owned Carribean holiday resort of Aruba "

Dutch-owned! RTE needs to do some research. Aruba is one of the constituent
parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. They have the same rights as the
other 2 parts which are the Netherlands Antilles (Curacao, Bonaire, Saba,
St. Eustatius and St. Maarten) and the Netherlands' territory in Europe.
Aruba is free to leave the Kingdom at any moment and declare independence.

The plane from Aruba is now scheduled to arrive at Schiphol Sunday at 17:30.

Sure.

Algeria was like that too, wasn't it?

Not comparable. Compare Aruba with Suriname, that got independence
peacefully in 1975. (and quickly became a mess thereafter, and lost half of
its population who emigrated to the Netherlands)

Apparently there is some nationalistic sentiment amongst Puerto
Ricans, but the place is hooked on aid from the US.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth. The populace are full U.S. citizens
(have the rights of other U.S. citizens but...) but don't get to elect
representatives to the federal government. They do however have a
relatively autonomous government, and, IIRC, are not subject to the
taxes of those residing in the U.S.

This is correct. I wonder if a non-Puerto Rican USA citizen moved to
Puerto Rico if they would then be exempted from the Federal Income tax.

I believe US citizens are taxed regardless of their place of residence. My
American friends living here in the Netherlands tell me they have to report
their income to the US tax office every year.
