Port Everglades Nearly Tops Its Own World Record for Most Passengers
in a Single Day
March 01, 2006

PORT EVERGLADES, FL (March 1, 2006) -- Broward County’s Port
Everglades came within a handful of passengers of breaking its own
world record for hosting more passengers on a single day than any
other port in history when 40,952 cruise passengers traveled through
the Port on Sunday, Feb. 26. Port Everglades originally set the world
record title for hosting the most passengers in a single day on Dec.
21, 2003, with 44,108 passengers.

“If Port Everglades hadn’t already set the world record in 2003, this
past Sunday would have done the trick. We were just one sailing short
of surpassing our own world record,” said Port Director Phillip C.
Allen. “On an average winter Sunday, Port Everglades hosts
approximately 10-12 cruise ships and 30,000 to 35,000 passengers.
This Sunday was extra busy due to the overlapping of cruise line
schedules and the popularity of cruises during the winter season.”

Though the Port hosted 12 ships this past Sunday, many of the ships
were much larger than on the previous record day and therefore carried
more passengers. Port Everglades’ previous passenger record reflected
a total of 15 ships in port.

Lined up bow to stern, the combined length of the cruise ships in Port
Everglades on Feb. 26, (if all in port at the same times and docked in
a row) would be nearly two miles – long enough for a taxi ride from
the port to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

The 40,952 passengers hosted on Feb. 26 is enough to fill a major
sports arena, such as Broward County’s Bank Atlantic Center, more than
two times over. Standing together, 40,952 people would completely
cover the massive 4.5-acre flight deck of a U.S. Navy Nimitz-class
aircraft carrier. Those passengers also would fill nearly 90
double-decker 500-passenger Airbus A380 megaplanes, the largest
passenger jet in the world.

Multi-day cruise ships in Port Everglades on Feb. 26, included:
Carnival Cruise Line’s 3,000-passenger Carnival Liberty, Celebrity
Cruises’ 2,000-passenger Infinity and 2,000-passenger Summit, Costa
Cruises’ 2,100-passenger Costa Mediterranea and 2,725-passenger Costa
Magica, Holland America Line’s 1,850-passenger Westerdam, Imperial
Majesty Cruise Line’s 1,000-passenger Regal Empress, MSC Cruises’
1,600-passenger MSC Lirica, and Princess Cruises’ 2,600-passenger Star
Princess and 2,000-passenger Sun Princess. Daily cruise ships,
Discovery Cruise Line’s 1,000-passenger Discovery Sun and SeaEscape
Cruises’ 1,000-passenger Island Adventure shared one cruise berth.

Forty cruise ships and 17 cruise lines call at Port Everglades,
including: Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruise
Lines, Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, Discovery Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd
Kreuzfahrten, Holland America Line, Imperial Majesty Cruise Line, MSC
Cruises, Princess Cruises, Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, Royal
Caribbean International, Seabourn Cruise Line, SeaEscape Cruises, and
Silversea Cruises.
The Port's ever-expanding fleet of cruise ships provides guests with
an array of cruise vacation choices from the popular Greater Fort
Lauderdale area including everything from sampler-size day cruises to
around-the-world cruises. Details on the latest cruise offerings are
available on Internet at www.broward.org/port.
