San Diego October 23
An article in today's paper is warning travelers of the overcrowded
conditions expected on October 23 when four megacruisers dock to unload eight thousand passengers and load another eight plus crew and chandlery. We will be on the Spirit that afternoon if we can get through the melee. And I doubt that even having the advantage of living here will help since one must drive up to the dock and be dropped by taxi or son or father-in-law. If you know of anybody sailing or arriving that day, you may want to warn them so they can consolidate luggage and prepay or whatever well ahead of time. They say the convention center may be used as a staging point and shuttle service provided by the San Diego Port Authority.... which I will believe when I see it! Wayne www.pueblaprotocol.com |

Which paper? AFAIK, one of the ships in port that day is the Crystal Harmony, 10/23 is the second day of a 10 day cruise from L.A. It may be picking up a few pax doing an 8 day r/t from S.D., but no one will be disembarking. And at less than a thousand pax, I'd hardly call it a megaship. One of the other ships was supposed to be the Radiance, but there was a post a couple months ago from someone booked on it who said they changed the departure port to Ensenada after he had booked. What are the other two ships? How B |

Hi:
I am booked on the Radiance of the Sea which was briefly switched from San Diego to Ensenada for embarkation when the port filled up. However, after multi complaints from the passengers who booked it from San Diego (and by the time we got the word of the change in embarkation there were no alternatives available if we cancelled and booked another line) and the inconvenience the transfer would be plus they wanted to charge us for the transfer ($70 pp), they said the transfer would be comped. Then I think the "suits" put the pencil to the paper and decided that it would be cheaper for them to sit out in the Pacific until the three other ships left and come into port to pick us up. No providing free bus service to Ensenada (plus hiring additional personnel to facilitate it), no having to provide meals on Sunday (other than, I hope, some kind of embarkation buffet) and a happy crew who will have lots of time to do housekeeping and happy waiters who won't be serving food. Our departure time has been moved to 11:00 p.m. They have eliminated Acapulco from the itinerary and added Puerto Vallarta in its place. We are just hoping that there won't be any more changes. While I had planned to come in a day early before, now we will arrive the day of departure since the late embarkation gives us a good amount of wiggle room. It will also allow us to attend a football game in Austin (Hook 'em Horns) October 22nd which we had planned to skip . Tucker in Texas |
