Just returned from cruise - don't get it...

: I like cruising but it is not my only means of travel or vacation. if you asked me what I would truly love it might well be a few days in Paris- and cruise ships don't really get there despite what the itineraries say. But even the few days in Paris is open to differing tastes, some people like cheap hotels (ewith real european feel, others like chain hotels (where they know what they are getting) others like expensive european feel hotels like the Crillon where everyone who sees them walk out know that they have money. Tastes vary that is why we still have options in travel. |

I followed the guidelines but was in the top 5-10% in terms of actually wearing what was "required". Does the term "required" appears anywhere in Celebrity's information? I think they use the term "suggested," like their sister-line, RCI, and competitor Princess. I don't expect to pay anything for any clothing to comply with the dress code (which I plan to do, to a great extent). Everything I need is already in my closet, AFAIC. What I do need to spend money on is lighter, casual clothing. Some of the stuff I have now is going to last just through this Summer, here, but beyond that -- I think I'd rather have the new stuff for the cruise in January, and then use that over next Summer. The port destinations were far too short to accomplish anything. All ports (Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozamel and Key West) left you in the most touristy areas which gave little ability to get to see the country. One of the first things impressed on me when I started researching going on a cruise was how important it was to choose the right itinerary. I had a choice between an itinerary with fewer ports-of-call and therefore longer at each port-of-call, or the one I chose, which is similar to the itinerary you chose. Different strokes for different folks. I ended up with the $3000+ cruise price plus an additional $1600 spend on board for shore excursions, drinks, spa treatments, bingo and very light gambling. I suspect that that is about what we'll spend. Thanks for the benchmark. I don't need that much structure to relax. I know people who rave about cruising but give me a condo on just about any beach and the ability to pick which restaurant I eat at in the evening and I will save thousands and be much happier. Am I alone here? I cannot believe that you're alone. I know that I'd, personally, go crazy with that sort of plan. -- bicker® http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/D...ry_040602.html |

Just returned from cruise - don't get it...

I just returned from a 7 day western Caribbean cruise on Celebrity Century. I guess it is me but I don't get it. Although this was my first cruise, I have traveled extensively (25+ European trips, 5 trips to Far East, Hawaii...). I really did not enjoy the cruise. The food was OK but seemed to emphasize quantity over quality. I saw people ordering 3 shrimp cocktails each dinner even though it wasn't a menu option. I definitely do not care for the "all you can eat" mentality. I don't either. For the most part, the servings I find at many restaurants are twice as much food as anyone should need. The dining servings on ships are actually sensibly sized. The buffet is typical buffet. Food on Century should be at least very good, at least the dining food. I had to start thinking about wardrobe options about a month prior and needed $700 worth of clothes to fulfill the requirements of the evening dress code. I followed the guidelines but was in the top 5-10% in terms of actually wearing what was "required". It supposed to be an elegant ship. Celebrity chose to expand their product to those that don't necessarily see it as an elegant ship and don't enforce their dress code. Some of us already have the clothes and enjoy the dress codes. The port destinations were far too short to accomplish anything. All ports (Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozamel and Key West) left you in the most touristy areas which gave little ability to get to see the country. A little research and you can get away from the touristy areas. You can arrange your own tour excursion. A cursory look at the itinerary reveals the time at port. For many of these Carribean cruises, ports aren't that important since many have been there countless times and people go for one feature (such as snorkeling, diving, shopping, etc.). I ended up with the $3000+ cruise price plus an additional $1600 spend on board for shore excursions, drinks, spa treatments, bingo and very light gambling. That's where the money is, onboard revenue. I don't need that much structure to relax. I know people who rave about cruising but give me a condo on just about any beach and the ability to pick which restaurant I eat at in the evening and I will save thousands and be much happier. I don't care for beaches or condos. I'm not even big on restaurants and eating. There are lines that have less structure than Celebrity. Part of the lure of cruising is some of the rituals and interaction with crew, sea, fellow pax, and/or your spouse. If you tried a cruise and didn't like it that's fine. I'm glad to hear it and want to hear it from more people so that the cruise lines will stop expanding. Am I alone here? In a cruise newsgroup? In the general population, of course not. In a specialized group of cruise enthusiasts, you'll find a handful of lurkers or ex-cruisers in your camp. Ben S. |

Excursions -- How Many? (not How Much?) (was Just returned from cruise - don't get it...)

escribió: Personally, I think you got carried away on the cruise. Everything you did like excursions and spa treatments costs a lot of money. That's how the cruiseline makes their profit...and on beverages too. Next time, perhaps try being a bit more frugal and you may surprise yourself and enjoy the cruise more. This is a good launching-off point for a question: How many excursions do folks recommend for a 7-day, 5 port-of-call itinerary? Miso, here, says that the OP seemed to have gotten carried away with respect to excursions and spa treatments. Being a first-time cruiser (really second-time, but the first time was a very regimented Nile River cruise), what do folks recommend along those lines? -- bicker® http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/D...ry_040602.html |
